Chapter 24

Helena

My eyes flew open, then quickly squeezed shut again as a sharp pain shot from them to my neck. Sniffing the air, my wolf caught something new, but familiar.

Blinking lightly, I wiped my eyes and shot up as I looked around. My wolf was calm inside me, though. Glancing down at the foot of the bed, I saw a dark, fluffy tail.

Leaning to get a look, the bed creaked, and a large brown wolf popped up, tense but tail wagging.

My wolf hummed, pacing eagerly. I shook my head, my nostrils flaring as I sniffed again. It was woodsy, like Chris. But a wolf for sure.

The wolf slowly came toward me, sidling up to the side of the bed. Staring into its eyes, my chest clenched as I reached a hand out. “Ch—Chris? Is that you?”

The wolf rubbed his head into my hand, its eyes closing. Reaching my other hand to him, I grabbed his muzzle and lifted his gaze to mine. “Chris? Am I—dead? Is this a dream?”

Chris was human, through and through. Rion must have finished me off. Or I was having a very lucid dream because the warmth and fur felt so real in my hands.

It’s me, Lena. I heard Chris's voice.

Not wanting to wake, I moved to the edge of the bed and wrapped my arms around the wolf’s large neck, running my fingers into the dark brown coat. Laying my face against him was comforting. If I could just stay like this, I could forget about the hell that awaited me when I woke up.

But suddenly, my fingers were no longer dug into thick fur but grasping a shirt. Pulling away, I sucked in a breath, taking in the sight.

Chris.

His hands went to my cheeks and lifted my face. Looking into his eyes, tears filled mine.

“Hey,” he whispered before crouching down and suddenly he was looking up at me. “We’re safe. For now. It’s okay.”

Unable to grasp if this was real or I was asleep, my hands frantically patted all over him, then flew to my own body.

Looking around, I shook my head. “No, this isn’t real. I don’t know this place. I was in my chamber in the castle. And you—you’re a human.”

My heart was racing but my wolf was trying to calm me. Once again, his hands were at my face, but his brows were pinched.

“Callie, Ana, can you come here?” he called over his shoulder.

A door flew open, and my friends rushed in.

“Lena. We’re here. What do you need?” Ana asked as Callie handed me a bottle of water.

I took the bottle, looking at it curiously.

“She’s seen bottled water, right?” Chris asked.

I pushed him out of frustration and started to wonder if I wasn’t dead or dreaming.

His eyes went wide, and Callie laughed. “She seems alright and has seen a water bottle.”

Ana grabbed my shoulder and I put my hand over hers. “Wh—where are we?” Turning my gaze back to Chris, my chest tightened at the look on his face. His lips turned down and his eyes were looking everywhere but me.
